Thing 23

Feedback about the 23 things program.
An interesting journey, learned about a lot of things I didnt know existed. Would have been nice to have time to explore the things in more detail instead of just doing the bare minimum required for each task. I also would have liked to have igoogle introduced sooner, as I found this really useful for keeping everything together in one place. Delicious is one of my favourites too... its great to be able to access all my bookmarks from any computer, especially as I will be travelling for 3 weeks soon so that will be really usefull. Overall, an eye-opening experience :)

thing 18

I went to the links provided and read the stuff on Library 2.0 these are my thoughts -
I think libaries are contantly evolving anyway. When I joined VU in 2000 we had 4 opacs and 2 webpacs.Since then I have seen the uni embrace millenium, and the introduction of "mylibrary" so students can check their loans and the status of items they have put on hold. The HEIP project, electronic books and journals, and more recently, Bonus, Learning commons and encore. Just think how far we have come since the days of catalogue cards in drawers! Libraries have been changing and making improvements ever since they were invented, so, in other words.... whats in a name?

thing 22

finally found someone else online so I could test google talk. I have used msn instant messeger and yahoo messenger in the past and I think these are both better than google talk. They have more features that appeal to young people, like a lot more smileys and other pics to add to messages, and they have chat rooms as well as private conversaions. the thing I found annoying about googletalk is that it doesnt let you remove contacts, so if you make a mistake with the email address it just adds @gmail to whatever you typed , and you cant get rid of it

thing 19

Put a photo of my cat on the pet page. Had a quick look at wikipedia and some of its sister sites.

thing 16 igoogle

This is the best thing yet! it has been driving me mad having all these different accounts, so to have them all in one place is wonderful! I have added gadgets for my blog, flikr, google book search, youtube, librarything, googledocs, google map search, google reader, facebook, deliciious, wikipedia, melbourne weather, and phases of the moon. I also discovered a feature of google maps that I didnt know about - I can type in a place then type in trian station, then backpacker hostels, and it shows which ones are closest to the station! which is great because I am backpacking to cairns by train in a couple of weeks :)

Thing 17

I had a look around delicious and found some really interesting websites, so I put the links in my blog. see list right

Thing 15

Today I looked at Google book search and google scholar. I found some books about organic gardening and vegetarian cooking and I added them to "my library" then I added an rss feed from google book search to my blog. But for some reason I when I click on it, it only shows the first book I added. hmmmmmm

Thing 14

see google doc ------>

thing 12

So I made a facebook for myself and I added 3 friends, but i cant find the victoria university facebook network mentioned in the thing 12 task. when I type in victoria university I get a few vu library staff but the majority are people from other countries. I found a vu student group but not a staff one. I was hoping to find old school friends or people i used to work with, but I dont think many people of my generation use these sites.... we are too busy! I looked at some of the library myspace sites, and they looked good, with lists of new books and "coming events" etc. but these could be included in any website couldnt they?
I read the article by Meredith Farkas which makes the point that just having a myspace or facebook for the library doesnt necessarily make it "cool" and I have to agree.... but maybe I just dont get it

Thing 11

Made a blog "link list"
Just had to add the chocolate blog for the yummy recipes!

Thing 10

I have just added a "latest news" feed from State Library of Victoria to my Google reader. I previously added a news "bundle" from Google, and Digg. I know we are supposed to talk about all these things being helpful and adding to our knowledge, but I find the content of Digg to be mostly rubbish. I am sure there are "real" news articles in there, but I think a person would waste a lot of time looking for them and be destracted by other junk along the way. I think a quicker way to get the latest news would be having "the age" or similar in your favourites list.

Thing 9

Ok I set up a feed reader in my google account, and I chose one of the bundles they offer, but how do I make a link to my blog?

Thing 8

Thing 6

Just checking out flickr a bit more.... I love the mosaic tool, where it can make a picture of a face using lots of tiny little photos of faces in different colours and shades.

p.s. my teenagers have never heard of flicker! when I asked if they knew about it they said "you mean the horse?"

Tivo and other stuff

Well I was going to stop talking about my tivo until I noticed another comment on my blog. thanks for the interest dancing queen :)
Now that I have one that actually works, its great. My teenage kids love it, because they can set it to record obscure stuff or old movies that are on in the middle of the night, or put in their favourite actors, like Simon Pegg and Noel Fielding, and the tivo will find upcoming programs in the next 2 weeks with those actors in them. I like it because if I stay at my boyfriends place all weekend I dont care if he watches the footy or whatever, because my favourite shows are being recorded at home to watch later, and no more nagging from my 14 yr old to stay up till 11 to watch "american dad"

The other thing I am loving at the moment is that its almost spring! My peach trees have pink buds on them, my jonquils are flowering, my rose bushes are puttting out leaves and my tulips have burst through the soil :) I love living in a place with distinct seasons... there's always something to look forward to!

thing 13

I did this last week without realising it was one of the 23 things! When the guy came to install my tivo I asked if he had any trouble finding my house, and he said he typed my address into Google street views on his laptop, and it showed him my house, how to get there and what my house looks like.... cool! so I had a look for myself. Its taken on a wednesday, cos the garbage truck is in my street, and its from about 6 months ago, because my picket fence is not quite finished, it had around 10 pickets to go. So then I looked up my sisters house, then my boyfriends house etc.

p.s. I have a new tivo as the first one was faulty and it works great :)

The continuing saga of the tivo and thing 4

Well, I had the antenna guy out yesterday and I got my abc1 and abc2, but the reception is awful.... he said he will come back next week to extend my antenna another 1.8m but last night the reception was perfect..... what the????
Also, the tivo keeps shutting itself down and restarting every 10 mins, which is extremely frustrating! we ended up switching over to analogue! so I have another guy coming out this afternoon to see whats wrong with it.... they said on the phone I may have a faulty box..... Geez!

p.s. I have done thing 4
I posted a comment on EMW's blog on wednesday :)

first blog

Well here it is, my first post. Not sure what to write about, I guess some kind of a journal.

the last couple of weeks has been all about technology (or problems with it) I bought a TiVo unit a week and a half ago, and until yesterday it sat on my lounge room floor. Had problems getting internet service to my area. finally got a local guy who has provided wireless with the help of an antenna on my roof. I asked the electrician to make my tv antenna higher while he was up there, so my tv reception would be better, but I lost 10, abc1 and abc2! My tivo was connected yesterday and I got 10 back, but still no abc.
